2008 Beijing Olympic Mascot

Beijing is holding a big party today to officially unveil its mascot for the 2008 Olympics. Among the favorites: the panda, the Tibetan antelope, the dragon and a mischievous magical monkey out of Chinese folklore.

David Tao "Love Can" World Tour Concert - Beijing

The concert is held at the first weekend that i came back from Tibet. Actually i don't want to go at the first beginning as i want to take some rest. Finally i went to the concert with Jonathan and Anson. Surprisingly the live show from David Tao is nice!! I do love his new remix - "流沙","Angel" and the unplugged section. It's definitely worth to see his concert! He's doing the best for each song.

A Bubble in Beijing?

There're two news headline that really shock me this weekend. One is "Yahoo pay 1 billion for 35% of alibaba"; another is "baidu up 354% in the first day of IPO". Why there're so many crazy stuff in beijing?

Let's take a look on the PE of baidu.com! (PE=1,099)!! I am not joking - it's the real number i calculated based on the 2005Q1 revenue from baidu and the new market cap today. The normal PE ratio for all China stock in NASDAQ is below 100. What make baidu so popular? I am not sure ... may be the effects of two hot topics that came together (i.e. search + China)? But don't forget two rivials are coming (Google and Yahoo)...

For the second headlines, that should impact me directly. As i am working in the Y!CN ecommerce sector, Alibaba is one of my major competitor. Suddenly it changed to my partner?! Really can't believe that... but that's the truth. (1 billion US Dollars = 80億 RMB). That can change all the things we established last year. How will that impact my job? (partnership, affiliate, integration) I don't know yet... but there must be sth that will be changed soon.

Nobody know what will happen if these three words come together
(China + Search + Ecommerce = ?) May be after my tibet trip :> I wil know more ...

Baidu.com slays the Street
Beijing's Baidu.com Inc., the little search engine that could, exploded onto the Nasdaq on Friday, Aug. 5. The $108 million initial public offering wasn't as big as Google Inc.'s and Baidu's revenue isn't anywhere near that of its Mountain View, Calif., Web rival. Baidu's not even the top search engine in China. But its initial public offering generated just about as much buzz as Google's did. Which probably accounted for its stock leaping 354% to close at $122.54 in first-day trading on Friday. Baidu, which was up more than 363% at one point in midday trading priced 4 million American Depositary Shares at $27 apiece, well above an already increased range of $23 to $25.

Yahoo in talks to pay $1B for China's alibaba
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Yahoo Inc., the Sunnyvale, Calif., online media company, is in advanced talks to buy about 35% of Alibaba.com, China's biggest homegrown e-commerce company, for almost $1 billion, sources close to the negotiations told Forbes.com. The deal would be the biggest investment by a foreign company in China's Internet industry, the Forbes online unit reported. Alibaba operates Taobao.com, an online auction site, and Alibaba.com, an online trading site. The deal poses a challenge to eBay Inc., the San Jose, Calif., online auction site, Forbes.com reported.

Worker Stadium

In the previous two weeks, i went to Worker Stadium several times. On 4 July, i played football there! (Ya... really played inside the real court, coz we're preparing for the FESCO Cup. Also it's not that expensive to play inside -- only 200RMB per hour for 1/3 full court). On 10 July, we watched the CSL (China super league - DaLin vs Beijing). It's my first time to watch the football match in China. The atmosphere is quite good! For the coming week, ManUtd is visiting Beijing. I am not sure whether i will be there too. -:>

Fantastic vegetarian food in beijing

It's my first time to try vegetarian food in beijing coz one of the visitor is vegetarian. The decoration of the shop is not that grand but the food is really fantasitc. Many vegetarian restaurant will try to make their food look like meat. This one does too, in addition, the taste and the texture is very similar to the real one. If i don't tell you it's vegetarian food, i think you can't figure out.
Even they served the fruits in a quite special way (put some dry ice in the water).

Quote from Xihua News:

antijp1.jpg

antijp2.jpg

antijp3.jpg

El Nino again

The first snow in Beijing yesterday didn't bring about the significant drop in tempreture expected. All the snow melt when they're on the ground.

The Meteorology in Beijing says a white Christmas is unlikely this year as Beijing experiences a warmer than average winter because of the global warming and El Nino event.

A relatively warm winter has a big impact on people's lives in Beijing. On the positive side there are big energy savings. On the negative side the warmer there is more air pollution, which harms people's health, and the lacks of snow has caused large revenue losses at ski resorts.

Living in farmhouse

Living in farmhouse is really an inetersting experience. This weekend i joined with the local guys to go the countryside. In this trip, we need to stay/eat in the farmhouse. That's really cool! We can eat the fresh egg, corn dodger and vegetables. Also we can play with the kids in the farm. They're really funny and helpful. After getting some rest, we start to climb the great wall at night and see the sunrise. The whole trip costs only 50Rmb including sleeping in the farmhouse. Cool!

NBA China Games 2004

NBA China Game in Beijing. It excited me when i heard of it first time. I really want to take a look in the China Capital Stadium. So i start to search around the web, buddies on how to get the tickets. Finally i had no luck to get the ticket because the tickets are too limited. That's what i expected too. (not very disappointed)

Later i watched the news in the TV, it reported that over 5000 aged 40-50 queued up in the ticket office to buy ticket. I can't believe those are the fans of NBA. They're employed by the Yellow COW people to get the ticket because of 4 tickets per head. That's really disappointed me. Why the police not taking any action to prevent that? They should really think about it. Otherwise I can't imagine what will happen in the olympics which is comming in 2008.
